Papa Bear Chair by Wegner
Would you like to sit as comfortable as if it was a soft bear hugging you from behind? This is the experience Hans J. Wegner offers you with his Papa Bear Chair. He actually named the chair following a review written by a critic, which described the chair like that. The lounge chair has been designed with armrests and wings, which simulates a bear hug. Wegner designed his Papa Bear Chair in 1951, and together with the 'Wishbone Chair' it is probably his most popular design.

Wegner's Papa Bear Chair is a modern wing chair
The lounge chair is lighter and more modern than we typically know from the traditional heavy wing chair. There is space enough to sit in many different ways, so you, for example, comfortably can place your legs on armrest and over the side instead, because they are so soft. At the same time the armrests are open enough for you to poke your legs out under them. The possibilities to sit in many different ways was precisely one of his top priorities.
The armrests has wood on the tips so the upholstery does not become greasy and dingy from the hands. In addition, the wood hides the points where the upholstery is set in place. With the bear analogy in mind, they visually resemble bear paws.
How is it constructed?
It is built on a strong frame where the chair's legs carries through and becomes armrests. The frame was from the beginning made by PP Møller, and they collaborated with Wegner for many years to come. Moreover, it was also PP Møller, who resumed the production of Papa Bear Chair in 2003 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary and after the production had been at a standstill.
The padding of the lounge chair is made of different materials including springs and tow, and no matter how you sit in the chair, you always get the best support. This supports the open armrests, where you can place your legs out over the side of the chair and thus sit comfortable in many different ways in the chair.
Designed with following dimensions:
|Seat height||42 cm (oak, cherry and ash)|
Papa Bear Chair with foot stool
Want to notch up the comfort? Then you can buy a Papa Bear foot stool, which Wegner has specifically designed for this lounge chair. It puts the icing on the cake to be able to put your feet up while watching TV in the evening, or while reading the newspaper on a Sunday morning. The foot stool is made of equivalent materials and design to fit perfectly with the chair.
For sale on the internet
In several cases, you can buy the Papa Bear Chair online, where it can be for sale on the websites of various furniture resellers. In addition there are, among other things, second-hand Papa Bear Chairs for sale on e.g. Lauritz – and here you can also find copy-chairs from companies that sells online from Ireland.
When you buy the chair online, there will be information on the website about delivery and other useful information.
The price may vary
The price of an original Papa Bear Chair varies depending which model you choose, with the leather chair being the most expensive. The price of a new chair starts at about 116.000kr. (£13.630 / $17.415).
As you can read more about further down on this site, you can obtain the chair at a significantly lower price if you choose to buy it second-hand. A good, nice replica cost about a tenth of the price of an original, however only possible if you buy from an retailer in Ireland.
A Papa Bear Chair is not cheap, but once purchased, you have a lounge chair which lasts year after year because of the high quality of the design chair. A replica chair in a good quality also lasts for years.
Is a copy of Wegner's Papa Bear Chair available?
There is a so-called Skipper Papa Bear Chair, which is a copy of Wegner's, but made by Skipper Furniture. Thus, this is not an original, but also a quite popular chair, which is not cheap.
In addition, you can buy an exact copy of Wegner's chair, which you can buy legally, because they are sold from Ireland where the law about copyright is only 25 years, and it is legitimate to sell replica furniture.
Where can you buy Wegner's Papa Bear Chair second-hand?
If you want to buy a second-hand chair, you can check e.g. eBay, where there are many second-hand designer furniture for sale, and you might get lucky and find one. If you have the courage to make a bid on the chair and wait and see if you get it, then auction websites such as Lauritz can be a great place to shop.
You should especially check the upholstery and padding thoroughly before making a purchase, since a reupholstering is expensive. If the chair is not in a good condition, you should negotiate the price down. The last couple of years, there has been a tendency with raising prices on second-hand chairs, although a lot of Papa Bear Chairs has been produced. If the chair is being sold as an original, it must have a label from Danish Furniture makers' Control.
