When talking about modern Danish design, it is impossible to disregard Arne Jacobsen's 'Swan Chair'. It is to this day one of the most loved and recognized Danish design chairs, whose popularity has not declined since it was designed in 1958. The chair was originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for the lobby and various lounge areas.

  • The 'Swan' in fabric, leather and several colour options
  • All about Arne Jacobsen's design
  • Timeless design that never goes out of fashion
  • The 'Swan Chair' at a cheaper price?

Do you also love the Danish design icon, but find that 20.00kr. (£2300 / $3000) is not within your budget? Then you can consider the options to get the 'Swan Chair' for a cheaper price. Because of the chairs popularity, it almost never is on sale. Therefore you have to look at alternative options such as buying second-hand, if you wish to buy it at a cheaper price.

There is a big price difference between fabric and leather upholstery, so if you wish to find the cheapest model you should look at a chair with fabric upholstery.

Second-hand 'Swan Chair'

There are several platforms and auction websites where you can buy second-hand furniture such as the 'Swan' by AJ. A good place to start is eBay and you can also check Gumtree and Lauritz.com. If you choose to buy the 'Swan' second-hand, you should, like with e.g. the 'Egg'. carefully check the foam padding since it often can be worn over the years and it is expensive to get it reupholstered. This is particularly true for the models with fabric upholstery, while you with the leather models should check for cracks in the leather.

A chair in innovative design

When it saw the day of light in 1950, it was in many ways an innovation. One of the most explicit features of the chair is that it does not have any straight lines, but consists entirely of curves. This caused great admiration around the world. The chair has now become a true classic in modern Danish design and is still in continuous production. If Danish design is your passion, then this chair is a must-have.

Inspiration from nature

AJ found great inspiration for his many furniture designs in the nature. This is also true for the 'Swan' which was given its name because it resembles a swan gliding over a lake. The soft curves and the design without straight lines are some of the features which has made this chair quite unique and cutting edge within modern Danish design. In addition to the huge inspiration from nature, one of Arne Jacobsen's distinctive features is his eminent attention to proportions and functionality.

The 'Swan Chair' is a beautiful example of how an eye for proportions can create a light and elegant impression in spite of a significant design. In both AJ's original 'Swan' and the used model, the proportions are top-notch and creates a furniture which provides an elegant and unique look for your home.

The 'Swan' is described as the younger brother of the 'Egg' since it is a visual extension of this chair, in addition to both of them being designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in the late 1950s.

The 'Swan' as sofa

The 'Swan' is also available as sofa in both an new or used. The sofa can, as is the case with the chair, be found in both lounges, hotels, companies and private homes around the world, but has not reached the same prominence as the chair.

The development of Arne Jacobsen's 'Swan Chair'

The 'Swan' was, like its brother the 'Egg', designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and just like it is the case with this chair, some minor changes has been made since the original version in 1958. The original base was aluminium moulded in one piece, while the base after 1973 consists of a base in aluminium mounted on a steel pedestal. The 'Swan Chair' with the original base moulded in one piece is rare and therefore popular with furniture collectors.

Furthermore, the chair was in a limited period produced with a base in laminated teak (type 4325). This model is rare, but visually also less elegant.

Furnish with Danish design in your home or office

The light and elegant design of Arne Jacobsen's 'Swan' makes it incredible easy to use for decoration in most rooms. The chair is available in a wide range of colours and materials. One cannot deny, that the entirely classic 'Swan Chair' is a leather version in either black, red or brown. However, the chair can also be obtained with a fabric upholstery, available in exactly your favourite colour. No matter the colour and materials, this chair expresses great taste and exclusiveness, and you get the reassurance of the modernist, Scandinavian design style that continues to be trendy.

No matter whether you have the original or choose to buy a copy of the designer chair, there are endless possibilities for great decor ideas. You can gather inspiration from various magazines and furniture stores,  how to display this elegant design in the best way possible. E.g. use it in your living room with your sofa or as a cosy reading nook in the corner with a floor lamp and a small table. If you wish to create a beautiful stylish look in your office, the the 'Swan' will fit in perfectly. Use this elegant design to create a home with great, classic style!
