'Series 7' chair in leather and with armrests – and other variants
Arne Jacobsen designed his 'Series 7' chair both with and without armrests, so there are two different basic models. They are both designed in 1955, and the rest of the design is the same with pressure moulded sliced veneer in different types of wood, while the base is made in chrome-plated steel. The earlier models does not have a metal or plastic shell under the seat. Like the 'Ant', which 'Series 7' is inspired by, not all of the original wood types are still in production, among other things, because this determines the price. Furthermore, the model with leather upholstery is significantly more expensive than the wood or fabric models. Of the wood models, you can choose from:

In addition, you can choose the surface just as wood or upholstered. The models with leather upholstery are more rare, while it is easier to buy 'Series 7' chair upholstered with cashmere, which is also very comfortable to sit on. Finally, you can also buy or have cushions made for the chair, if you want the wooden chair to be softer to sit on.

In addition to the many standard versions, there are also special anniversary editions of 'Series 7'. In 2015 the chair had its 60th anniversary, and on this occasion Fritz Hansen produced some special editions which were only available that year, and which therefore typically become collectibles later on. It concerns two editions in special colours, namely the feminine version painted pink and with 24-carat gold plated base, as well as the more masculine, which is painted dark blue and with a powder coated and polished base.

An innovation within Danish chair design
When 'Series 7' chair came out, it was a technological innovation in furniture design. It was completely new to bend plywood in three dimensions in the manner as is seen in the AJ 'Series 7' chair. The predecessor of the 'Series 7', the 'Ant', and the chair itself, is believed to be inspired by designs by the famous designer couple Eames. Arne Jacobsen has generally been excellent to draw inspiration from abroad and then create his own design in line with the strong Danish and Scandinavian style. His designs are therefore still extremely modern and does not seem to ever go out of fashion.
