Series 7 Variants
One of the reasons behind ‘Series 7’ chair’s great popularity is its availability in multiple versions – do you prefer it with or without armrests, with wheels, or maybe as a bar stool? With a wide range of models and colours within ‘Series 7’, you can create your own, personalized version.
All the variants stem from two basic models – with and without armrests, both designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955. Aside from this difference, the rest of the design is the same, with pressure moulded sliced veneer in different types of wood, while the base is made from chrome-plated steel. The earlier models didn’t have a metal or plastic shell under the seat. Similar to the ‘Ant’, Jacobsen’s chair ‘Series 7’ was based upon, not all of the original wood types are still in production. The choice of materials determines the price to a large degree, with leather upholstery being significantly more expensive than the wood or fabric models. If you decide to get a wooden model, you can choose from multiple types of wood, including:
- Dark stained Oak
In addition, the surface can be upholstered or not. The models with leather upholstery are rarer, while it’s easier to find ‘Series 7’ chair upholstered with cashmere. Finally, you can also buy or have cushions made for the chair if you want it to be softer to sit on.
You can find both fully upholstered and front upholstered versions, while the wooden ones can be in either a glossy or coloured lacquer. We offer the following colours:
- Dark grey
- Dark blue
In addition to many standard versions, there are also special anniversary editions of ‘Series 7’. In 2015 the chair had its 60th anniversary, and on this occasion, Fritz Hansen produced special editions which were only available that year, and are regarded as collectables later on. Two special editions are worth mentioning, namely, the “feminine” version in pink colour and with 24-carat gold plated base, as well as the more “masculine” one, which is painted dark blue, and with a powder coated and polished base.

An Innovation Within Danish Chair Design
When ‘Series 7’ chair first came out, it was viewed as a technological innovation in furniture design. The bending of plywood in three dimensions as is seen in this design has never been done before. Along with its predecessor, the ‘Ant’ chair, ‘Series 7’ is believed to be inspired by designs of the famous designer couple Eames. Jacobsen’s great strength which lay at the core of his innovation was the ability to draw inspiration from abroad and create original designs in line with the Danish and Scandinavian style. With this blending of styles and features, Jacobsen’s designs are still modern looking and do not seem to ever go out of fashion.
A Gem of Functional Design
Besides being an elegant and beautiful creation with slick curves combined in a sharp design, ‘Series 7’ also retains the functionality usually associated with modern Danish style. The chair can be stacked, which is extremely handy in a modern home, lightweight and comfortable, completely in line with his world famous ‘Egg’ or ‘Swan’. Furthermore, it’s simple, yet expressive design makes it a great decorative element. So, whether you need a new chair for the office or for the dining table, you can find a design that fits your style with Arne Jacobsen’s ‘Series 7’. You can also find his bar stool that can take your kitchen or lounge to new heights. The great recognizable design can make your home shine again and create a look that never goes out of fashion.
‘Series 7’ is available in a wide variety of colours and multiple materials, including wood, cashmere, fabric, veneer and leather, allowing you to find the exact style you’re looking for.
